This light is from the Danish design group Muuto - meaning change in Finnish. They designed this light to be used in early evening 'to create a cozy mood.' Their leading design principle is to take a fresh, uncomplicated look on everyday items -  to illicit a response like: How clever - why didn't I think of that?

Dream Bath

I've never seen porthole/trailer windows used on an interior. This bathtub parlour mixes a special shade of green with white and creates a boozy, sleepy, spell-like mood. It feels like it's nicely hidden - tucked away in a soft pocket of the house - and a perfect spot to sip on a chilled gin & tonic and read a delicious mystery.

Simple Extreme

Caroline Swift's collection is a well-edited selection of delicate, simple romantic pieces that can be worn, given or used as embellishment. The packaging is black or white finished with elegant twine and a flirty ceramic notion. 

The glass vessels remind me of a summer swim and the nesting bowls are so thin and delicate, they are almost luminescent. 

I think I may have found my little black dress for the summer. 

Natural Fibers

I've been experimenting (with some help from Lee and our friend Daniel) with newspaper 'yarn'. I got the idea from Greetje van Tiem when she was featured on Greenupgrader. 

We've made some yarn and then crocheted it with thin, copper wire. I made a lampshade out of our first batch. I'm a little obsessed...

It throws a fantastic shadow and the variations in print color really stick out.

I've been looking for furniture and lighting made from non-traditional materials. I ran across these chairs and lights from Yonoh of Spain made with rope.

Tie me up with a Textilkabel

I'm seeing more and more woven designs every day. One particular woven art supply has been very hard to find! I have been on the hunt for woven electrical cable for a couple of projects. Woven cable (Textilkabel) is an insulated cord that is usually found on irons in Europe. Today I landed on Textilkabel-Lowenstein in Frankfurt. Not only do they have woven cable but they have an amazing color selection! They also sell hard-to-find ceramic lightbulb housings.

Ross Russell and his wife Sally challenged dRMM architects and Ross' old schoolmate, Alex de Rijke to design a sliding house that provided 'degrees of shelter.' Together they've created a mold breaking house that changes shape and form with the power of two car batteries. In dRMM's brief to the Ross family, they proclaimed, "We are prepared to be radical." I worked on a project about six years ago and I was so excited to work for the first time with a lighting consultant. Lighting is a special aspect of design and creating a mood. These handmade lights by Anna Hössle reflect her background as a professional bookbinder. The detail and quality comes only from this kind of handmade craftsmanship.
